Boys & Girls Club of Trenton/Mercer County


The Boys & Girls Club of Trenton & Mercer County has been serving Trenton youth since 1937.  It is part of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, a national organization of 4,000 Clubs that in 2006 celebrated the Centennial of its founding.  Boys & Girls Clubs are community-based organizations that provide young people with fun, safe, and constructive after-school environments.  Our Club in Trenton, New Jersey, provides programs and services to 2,300 children and young adults in its Trenton facility at 212 Centre Street and at eleven elementary school-based program sites in Trenton.

Our mission is to inspire and enable all young people, especially disadvantaged youth, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Goals and Programming
Boys & Girls Club programs focus on character development, intervention, education, technology, and career preparation.  These are our goals:

- Increase the number of Club members graduating from High School each year.
- Increase the number of Club members entering into post High School career paths each year.
- Increase Club members school engagement level.
- Increase Club members positive youth development.

1.  Plumbing Consultant
The club seeks a seasoned professional plumber to analyze the Club's main drain system.  Propose potential solutions up to removal and replacement.  Can also include cost estimates, bids, and/or completing the required remedy.
 
Job Tasks
     Analyze and diagnose main drain problem.
     Develop various plans of action based on time, cost and effectiveness.
    Obtain cost estimates and/or bids
     Conduct the work and/or supervise a licensed contractor.
 
Experience- 5 years or more of experience in commercial plumbing application and construction.

Time Commitment:  We anticipate the analysis to take 6-10 hours of time, which can be done on a flexible schedule.

 

 

2.  Job Developer
Works with Teen staff to develop a list of potential employers/type of industries in which graduates from the Club's work readiness program could seek employment with.  Makes connection with these potential employers and see if there are potential matches for Club teens, and if so what are the job requirements, application process, etc.  For this information develops a 'Jobs Book' which can be used by Club staff to refer appropriate teens.
 
Job Tasks
     Work with Teen staff to develop a list of potential employers/industries.
     Develops a format to collate information and provided in a resource format for easy access by Teen staff.
     Solicit information from local employers and identify matches.
     Document these matches.
     Train teen staff how to access these matches.
 
Experience:  Human resources and/or out-going personality.  Can communicate affectively both about the Club and potential matches with county employers.

Time Commitment: We anticipate this project taking about 40-60 hours over a two-three month time period. Hours can be flexible based on the availability of the volunteer. Work can be conducted on or off site.

 

 

3.  Graphic Artist
Develop templates for communicating both internally and externally.  These new templates will have an uniform/professional look, and save staff time in developing flyers, newsletters, email blasts, memo, faxes, etc.  Artist would work with current BGC themes and graphic standards, in coordination with Development Director, to produce these templates.  Volunteer would also conduct a training for staff to demonstrate how to insert their information into the templates.
 
Job Tasks
     Work with Club staff on developing scope of work, and deliverables.
     Produce draft templates for review and approval by Development Director
     Schedule and conduct training for Club staff.
 
Experience:  Graphic artist experience, marketing, related software knowledge.  Ability to develop appealing and easy to use templates.

Time Commitment: We anticipate this taking 25-40 hours of time over a two to three month period. Hours are flexible to the volunteers schedule. Work can be completed on or off site.

 

 

4.  Entrepreneur Program Developer
Works with Teen staff to select a curriculum and start up a Teen Entrepreneur program for high school students.  Solicit volunteers from local businesses to assist teen staff in leadership of the program.  Work with Development team in identifying possible funding sources for the program.
 
Job Tasks
     Select a curriculum.
     Develop the support materials for an effective program (supplies, equipment, business plans)
     Recruit mentors to help implement the program.
     Conduct a training and/or orientation for all parties.
     Over see the first implementation of the program for modifications.
 
Experience:  Teaching and/or business skills.  Experience working with teens and/or training of adults.


 

 

5.  Business Plan Developer
Works with Executive Director on developing specific social entrepreneurial business plans for providing both operational funding and jobs for teens.  
 
Job Tasks
     Identify which business model best fits with their skills and interests.
     Develop a business plan.
     Present plan to Club and volunteer leadership for implementation.
     Assist with the implementation of the plan.
 
Experience:  Business plan development, business skills & experience.

Time Commitment: We anticipate this project requiring about 30 -40 hours of work per business plan developed. These hours can be flexible to the volunteers schedule and can be don on or off site. An additional 20-30 hours are optional to help with the implementation phase of the plan. These hours would be tied to the specific projects operational hours.
