"Crossing Borders" volunteers
Volunteer Opportunity Details:
| Last updated on March 3, 2010 |
We are currently recruiting volunteers for our Spring 2010 "Crossing Borders" with Literature program funded by the Princeton Area Community Foundation. Volunteers are invited to participate in the literature programs offered at our partnering sites. Volunteers do not teach, they can sit and relax and enjoy the dynamic conversation that evolves when a diverse group reads a complex short story together. Stories are read aloud by a trained coordinator, who also facilitates the discussion. Each participant is given a copy of the story to read along. Through "Crossing Borders" we bring together people from different socio-economic, racial and ethnic backgrounds and create dialogue across communities. Group members are often amazed to find how much they have in common with other participants, as close attention, understanding and humor combine to build bridges. Here are some quotes from former Crossing Borders volunteers: “From our first session, I felt that this was an incredible group of people and since then the chemistry of the group has evolved. And just like any class I’ve taught, the members share a bond. Being in a group discussing stories leads to a wonderful, magical end.” Suzy D. (Hightstown)
Here are some quotes from recent Crossing Borders volunteers: “I have seen yet again how many experiences all people share and that it is wonderful to be able to talk easily about these experiences using the stories as a jumping off place. That seems to take a lot of the onus off sharing some very personal things.” Sally M. (Lawrenceville) “Participating in the Crossing Borders program has been a joy. Sharing a work of literature with people whose life experiences connect to the story in so many different ways has been enlightening, encouraging and deeply meaningful. I look forward to every session.” Diane W (Princeton)
“I never thought reading a story could be so interesting. Usually once I read a story I think about the characters and whether I liked them or not. But I never realized that a story could cause you to see a great deal of yourself and the world you live in. It makes me wonder if I really got all I could from what I’ve been reading.” Jackie R. (Trenton)
